Documents of the Ayurvedic medicine, dating back to the 7th century BC, refer to the "trikatu". Trikatu is a Sanskrit word which refers to the combination of black pepper (Piper nigrum Linn.), long pepper (Piper longum Linn.) and Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.). In the traditional Ayurvedic medicine, these ingredients are essential components of many recipes and formulations used for a wide range of diseases.
The benefits of Trikatu
Black pepper is a healing species of great importance within the Ayurveda. It has cleansing and antioxidant properties. In addition, it is a bioavailability enhancer, i.e. it helps carry the beneficial properties of other herbs to different parts of the body. It supports the flow of oxygen to the brain, improves digestion and circulation, and stimulates the appetite, in addition to maintaining the health of the respiratory system and joints.
Black pepper is a species that heats and contributes to the pungent flavour, balances Kapha, helps balance Vata and increases Pitta.
In Ayurveda, long pepper is known as a rasayana, rejuvenation treatment that favors longevity. It contains a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor compound called Piperine.
Long pepper regulates menstrual flow and prevents irregular menstruations. It solves problems related to the sexual organs, and increases fertility and libido in women.
It protects the liver against external damage, by removing the toxins and preventing the jaundice.
Long pepper helps digestion and reduces stomach heartburn. It is beneficial in the treatment of dyspepsia, anorexia, abdominal pain and flatulence.
Also, it is useful in respiratory conditions: it helps expel mucus accumulated, and it is generally beneficial for diseases like cough, bronchitis and asthma.
The use of ginger in Ayurveda is so large that it is considered a first-aid kit in itself, there is an Ayurvedic sutra (verse) which says that everyone should eat fresh ginger before lunch and dinner to improve digestion. Apart from animating the gastric juices, whets the appetite, improves the assimilation and transport of nutrients to specific tissues and opens the microcirculatory channels of the body.
